One of two nature parks in the German state of Thuringia is the Thuringian Forest Nature Park (German: Naturpark Thüringer Wald).
The nature park, which was established in 1990 and expanded in 2018, now spans more than 2,200 km2 (850 sq mi). It encompasses practically the entire Thuringian Forest and the Thuringian Highlands, with Eisenach in the northwest and Sonneberg in the south, and it surrounds the Rennsteig. The 337 km2 (130 sq mi) biosphere reservation, as well as a number of dams, including the Tambach-Dietharz, Schmalwasser, Ohra, Lütsche, and Leibis-Lichte dams, are protected by the nature park.
The Großer Beerberg (982 m above sea level (NN)) and the Schneekopf (978 m above sea level (NN)) are the two tallest mountains in the park.
The „UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Thuringian Forest,“ created in 1979 as the first UNESCO biosphere reserve in Germany, is expanded by the nature park. After additions in 1990 and 2018, the biosphere protection, which is situated in the Thuringian-Franconian low mountains, presently spans 337 km2. [2] [3]
The Naturpark Thüringer Wald is the largest national natural area in Thüringen, stretching over an area larger than 2200 square kilometers along the Rennsteig from Sonneberg to Eisenach. Alongside dense mountain ranges and uniform mountain peaks, colorful mountain meadows with Arnika define the landscape. The glowing medicinal plant „Arnika“ is recognized as a trademark for nutrient-rich mountain meadows and is an integral part of the Thüringer Wald Naturpark’s logo. The Thüringer Wald UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is located in the center.
The Rennsteig serves as a focal point and a metaphor for a unique natural experience. This approximately 169-kilometer height hike through the Thüringer Waldes Natural Area. The Rennsteig ascends to a height of just under 1000 meters in the Middle Thüringer Forest, between Oberhof and Schmiedefeld, over the Big Beerberg and the Snowkopf. The Nationale Geopark Thüringen Inselsberg – Drei Gleichen in the northern part and the Nationale Geopark Schieferland further south are both located within the boundaries of the Naturpark Thüringer Wald. The land spreads out in the southern section of the Thüringer Wald National Park. The Rennsteig enters Spechtsbrunn at the Kalten Kitchen and proceeds to the nearby nature reserves of Frankenwald and Thüringer Schiefergebirge/Obere Saale. Thus, the Kalte Küche serves as the gateway to three different natural parks, creating a singular experience for all of Germany.
